Initiated by Julia Kristeva in 2008 to mark the 100 th anniversary of the birth of Simone de Beauvoir (January 9, 1908), the Prix "Simone de Beauvoir for women's freedom" rewards the outstanding work and action of women and men who, in the spirit of Simone de Beauvoir, helping to promote women's freedom in the world.

Culturesfrance Supported by the National Book Centre and Editions Gallimard, Prix Simone de Beauvoir for women's freedom ", with 30,000 euros, is awarded annually to the winner (s) elect (s) by an international jury.

The jury awarded the " Simone de Beauvoir for women's freedom " 2010 to Ai Xiaoming & Guo Jianmei , two women engaged in fight for women's rights in China:

- Ai Xiaoming : videographer and Professor of Language and Chinese Literature, Director of the Section of Comparative Literature, Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou.

- Guo Jianmei : Lawyer in the Chinese NGO "Women's Law Studies and Legal Aid Center" , Beijing.

Ms. Ai Xiaoming

Professor in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Director Section of Comparative Literature, Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou.

Change for Equality:  According to a report by Radio France International, Persian Service the One Million Signatures Campaign has been awarded the  Simone de Beauvoir  Award which was established in honor and memory of this Feminist theorist and writer. For the past two years on the 9th of January, the birthday of Simone de Beauvoir an Award has been given to persons or groups which work to promote women’s rights. The first Simone de Beauvoir Award, in commemoration of her centennial, was given to Taslima Nasreen the writer and women’s rights defender from Bangladesh and to Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a former member of the Parliament of the Netherlands.

Julia Kristeva,  the renowned Bulgarian-French philosopher, writer and psychoanalyst who is the founder of the Award and who heads the jury for the Award explained more about the decision of the Jury in an interview with Radio France International, Persian Service:
"Simone de Beauvoir continued the struggle for women’s rights—an effort that has spanned two centuries. With her world renowned book ’ The Second Sex ’ Simone de Beauvoir created a Revolution in the international women’s movement.
The jury for this award, which is comprised of approximately 20 internationally known figures including several writers, sociologists, philosophers, journalists and politicians, wanted to emphasize the fact that the struggle for women’s rights is not a French, European or Western concept, rather it is a struggle that has attracted women across the world.
Last year this Award was given to Taslima Nasreen, who has been harassed and persecuted [in relation to her struggles for women’s rights]. This year we were immensely moved by the courage of Iranian women and the innovate style of their struggle.
This movement [the One Million Signatures Campaign] is engaged in an important effort to explain the meaning and nature of human rights and women’s rights to women themselves, encouraging each of them to become involved in the struggle against inequities. The One Million Signatures Campaign is a new and innovative movement because it has not taken shape around one progressive and famous central figure, rather it is a broad movement, where activists visit with other women, engage in face to face discussions with them, they go home to home, and explain to each woman about women’s rights.
Through this [face-to-face] strategy and through the internet they have created a broad network of ideas and persons, which includes women from all backgrounds, including women from low income and socio-economically advantaged groups. This effort is in line with the spirit of Simone de Beauvoir’s work. By giving this Award to [to the One Million Signatures Campaign] we want to encourage these women and demonstrate our love and solidarity with them."

Two excerpts from poems by Simin Behbahani

Simin Behbahani (en persan : سیمین بهبهانی) is one of the major figures of contemporary Persian poetry, known for his lyrical style, the "ghazal" (poetic form fixed). She was born in 1927 in Tehran in a family of intellectuals. His father was a famous journalist and her mother Fakhr Ozma Arghoon, a poet who championed the rights of women. Simin Behbahani has published his first collection of poetry at the age of 14. Her poems stand out from the outset by the fact that she speaks as a woman, her amorous desires, then it is usually men poets who write about it. Later, Simin Behbahani is a name by updating the ghazal. After the 1979 revolution, his poetry is increasingly read and understood. In these poems, it deals with topics that affect the social and political life, speaks of desire, love and freedom in a society that is choking under the weight of the forbidden. She is actively involved in defending freedom of expression and acts in support of women's movements for their rights. She was one of the first to declare its support for the campaign "One Million Signatures" which calls for the repeal of all discriminatory laws against women. It is now recognized and beloved of Iranians inside the country and in the diaspora, for his poems, his words and deeds committed.

She has published more than a dozen books.

In 1999, his collection of poems, A Cup of Sin (A cup of sin), was published by Syracuse University Press in the United States.

In 1998 she was awarded the Hellman-Hammett association of human rights Human Rights Watch, awarded to writers who are victims of political persecution and in financial need.

In 1999, she received the medal Carl von Ossietzky, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1936 that had risen against the rise of Nazism in Germany.

The Simone de Beauvoir prize for Women’s freedom 2009

is awarded to the Iranian campaign “One Million Signatures”

Founded by Julia Kristeva in 2008 on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Simone de Beauvoir (9 January 1908), the Simone de Beauvoir prize for women's freedom recognises the exceptional work and actions of women and men who, in the spirit of this feminist icon, contribute to the freedom of women throughout the world. 

Contributions to the €30,000 prize money awarded with the Simone de Beauvoir prize for women’s freedom were received from Culturesfrance, the Bibliothèque nationale de France (French national library), the Centre national du livre (national book centre) and the publisher Éditions Gallimard.

The international prize committee awarded the 2009 Simone de Beauvoir prize for women's freedom to One Million Signatures, a grass roots campaign run by Iranian women, for the audacity and originality of thought behind their actions. They campaign against laws that discriminate against women in Iran, and their objective is to obtain a million signatures in support of their efforts (see presentation http://www.we4change.info/spip.php?article19 ).

By awarding this prize, the prize committee for the Simone de Beauvoir prize for women's freedom wishes to make a contribution to international solidarity, in order to reaffirm women's rights, guarantee protection for those who risk their lives for their freedom and stand beside them to defend their ideals of equality and peace.
